Hard Work vs Smart Work – A Case Study

Share your love
Once a customer reported to a Japanese soap company, that He had bought hundred of soap packets and out of which one is empty.

The manager got very serious about it, and asked the engineering department to find out the fault.

The engineer department came into action, and after one month of hard work they finally found that, it was the packaging department where things were going wrong.

Actually, in the packaging machine some packets were left out.

When the engineering department reported back to manager, the manager decided to take action so that it will prevent further issues.

He asked the engineering department to make an xray machine connected to a monitor so that they could monitor which box is empty.

And, hopefully the xray machine was ready, and now a person can keep watch over it and separate the empty soap packets.

It seems company did a great job.

After some days a similar problem came across a small company, soap manufacturing company.

But, they didn't invested so much money on the scanners or any other devices, instead they got rid of it without any manpower or stress on pocket.

Can you answer, how they did this?

Think.

No problem, no hurry you can think a little bit more.

Got any idea, No?

What they did is just put a fan in front of the packaging machine with a specific speed so that only empty soap packets will be pushed away, as they are light weighted.

Wasn't it simple and clever!

This is the power of smart thinking.

Here, both have achieved the solutions to the same problem, but you can see the difference.

It’s the smart work which made all the difference here.

What is Hard Work?

Hard work doesn’t mean you are willingly bumping your head into a wall to make a way.

Hard work, in simple words, you are committed to do a task and you are giving your hundred percent.

When someone works hard, it works physically hard, but using a very little of brain power.

I said, very little because in the above story the first company used their brain to find a soul yet very expensive. While the other one, used their brain to find a simpler solution.

Hard work generally focuses on number of hours, without actually focusing on the output.

Or, we can say when someone works with a hundred percent commitment, but lacks qualities like organizing, prioritizing, planning, deep thinking etc. then he or she is said to be working hard.

What is Smart Work?

Still have doubts regarding smart work, read the next section why you should be a smart worker?

Why you should be a smart worker?

There are various benifits of being a smart worker, which will tell you why you should work smart.

How can you be a smart worker?

I’ll tell you 22 different things which you can do to be more smarter, let’s go…

1. Use your brain

As we discussed above, this is the main difference maker. Most of the hard workers generally work hard physically, but as a reminder Industrial Age is long ago gone.

As it is the information age, so you should be working smart, and start working on your brain instead of physical hard work.

No on think of using your brain, how can you??We will discuss it later.

2. Don’t act straight forward

Don’t just go and jump into action, first analyse the situation.

How to use your brain? Here is your answer.

The first step is to think and analyse the situation.

So, as I said don’t act straight forward, first think.

3. Make Plans

The third step, (here also you have to use your brain only) to make plans.

Now as you have analysed the situation well, you can think of the different outcomes.

According to that make a flexible plan. First you have to think of possible outcomes (again by using your brain power), than make a plan.

4. Keep a flexible approach

This step is very important.

Many hard workers also make plans, but when things don’t go as planned, either they quit or stick to that plan only.

But you have to make your plans flexible. If needed, you have to make some change, but remember only if needed.

5. Choosing the grounds

This is also a very important step, you have to choose your fields carefully.

It’s better to be an average worker in any specialized field than to be a master in normal fields.

You have to choose your field on the basis of demand and supply.

Make use of your brain and your analysing power to choose a correct field.

6. Acquire Rare Skills

If you want to be a smart person, than you have to have something exceptional so that you can stand on the soldiers of giants.

Moreover, acquiring rare skills will help you earn more with less amount of work. Let’s take example with a fictional story…

Once, a fault occurred in a large ship.

Captain: What happened?
Crew member : Nothing sir, seems there is a fault in the engine, we will sort it out soon.
Captain: Ok, do it fast.

FEW HOURS LATER....

Captain: What's the report?
Crew Member: We are working on it sir!
Captain: Where is the engineering department?
Crew member: They are already working on the situation sir!

FEW HOURS LATER....

Captain: Hey, what is the status?
Engineering dept. : Sorry sir but we are unable to find out the fault.
Captain: So, what should we do now?

There were two voices in reply...

First: Sir, we can call the chief of the enginering department.
Second: There nearby lives an old man and is expert at fixing ships as he is doing it from his young age.

Captain: Hmm, call the chief engineer!

THREE DAYS LATER....

Chief engineer: Extremely sorry sir, but it seems, it will require more funds and more time to find out the problem.
Captain: What......?

Crew member: Sir, should we call the old man?
Captain: Who old man...?
Crew member: Sir, that one....from young age....repairing!
Captain: Yeah, yeah I remember, call him!

FEW HOURS LATER....

The genius: Hello captain!
Captain: Welcome sir.
The genius: Yup, give me some room.
Captain: Yeah sure!

TEN MINUTES LATER...

Old man after examining the engine took his hammer out and started beating on a specific point.
After five to ten taps,he asked to turn the engine on.

Magic, it was perfectly fine!

Captain:Thank you very much you are a genius. What are the charges?

Old man: Only 2000$ .

Captain: Two thousand dollars just for this?

Old man: Smiling, said No, no It's only 10$ for the hamer beatings but 1990$ is for finding where to beat.!

I hope you got the point.

Although, it was a fictional story but I hope you got the point of acquiring rare skills.

7. Focus on Results not on hours.

This step is pretty clear, but very difficult to adapt.

It’s our human psychology that we always compare our work with hours instead of results.

You must have heard, I studied for two hours, but there isn’t mention what he learnt.

So, from now on, when you think, that I have worked for four hours, now I can take a break, be sure to tell yourself what actually you learnt in those four hours.

8. Outsource

According to Robert T Kiyosaki author of Rich Dad’s Cashflow Quadrant, why many small businesses always remains small businesses, instead of becoming a big business. He explains, those who are in the ‘S’ quadrant (self employed or small businesses), always they can do their tasks perfectly and they never outsource any tasks because they think no one can do it better. That’s why they are also called the hard workers.

But you don’t have to be a hard worker and always outsource the unimportant tasks which anyone can do for you.

Smart worker always uses OPM( other people money) and OPT!( other people time).

9. Focus on your strengths

Smart people always focus on their strengths.

They become so extra ordinary in their fields, resulting in no competition.

If you don’t want to work hard then you have to work on to strengths to such a level that no one can compete.

10. Get rid of Useful Weakness

All people have weaknesses, smart people have too.

But there are two types of weaknesses:

  • First are those which have to do nothing with your professional life and can’t add value, can be simply ignored.
  • Second are those which can add value, than you have to work upon them and get rid of them.

11. Time is Money

Smart workers, knows the importance of time and hence manage their time properly.

If, you want to be successful than you have to work upon managing your time.

Here’s a complete guide how you can manage your time properly.

12. Surround yourself with successful people

Hardworking people always fear of those who are more successful than them, whereas smart people love to be in company with people who are more successful than them.

If you want to be a smart person, than you have to find a right environment for yourself.

13. Specialized skills

As mentioned above, you have to have rare skills, you must have specialized knowledge about them.

Although you have rare but can’t implement them, to avoid them you must be a specialist.

14. Ask for help

People think that they are smart, so why they should ask for help?

But, this is their biggest mistake.

Smart people know the importance of time and hence if they stuck on a problem they just contact experts instead of wasting time.

15. Be Innovative

Smart workers are initiative and always try to find best ways of doing things.

They always try to find out the easiest way to do things before they actually act.

So if you want to be smart than you have to think, think hard and have to be inovative.

16. Be sure of what you want

Most people skip this step and they think they know, what they want.

But trust me almost 90 percent of people only have little idea.

If you want to achieve your goals, than you should know exactly what you want – Napoleon Hill said in his book Think and Grow Rich.

17. Accept Failures

It’s very interesting, that smart people, when they know they are losing, they accept their failures and get out of there as soon as possible or change their plans immediately.

But hard workers don’t do it, they think they will win if they work hard.

Maybe you can but it will take very long time.

So, my advice to you is, accept your failures and move on.

18. Keep things under control

This is very important, you have to learn to keep things under control.

Smart people keep things under control and can make bold moves whenever they wish or situation demands.

But hard workers don’t have the freedom as they are controlled.

19. Be optimistic

This is a very good quality of smart people, that they always focus on the positive side and think positively

So, you have to be positive.

Positive thinking doesn’t mean to think positive it means positive approach.

If you want to know more about positive thinking and how you can have a positive approach, then read this article.

20. The real meaning of laziness

I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.

~ Bill Gates

Most hard workers think that, smart workers are lazy and don’t want to work but actually they save their time and effort by finding the simplest way.

Moreover, they make things simple to do in our day to day life.

21. Give to community

What you give, God will give you 100 times more than that.

Smart people also use this very smartly.

They give to community and in return when value increases they make profits.

Whatever, you must learn to give.

22. Be Spontaneous

It doesn’t mean you have to act without thinking, but instead it means you have to think and act as fast as possible.

But remember make wise decision!

23. Choosing opportunities

As of now, I hope you are a smart worker, but there is one skill you must have.

You must learn how to say no.

Smart people choose between opportunities very carefully.

So be aware and here also think whether it’s good for you Or not.

That’s it.
