There are many more qualities which a good friend have, but we’ll proceed now to the danger!

Celebrates your success

A real friend is happy for you from heart and will celebrate your smallest achievements.

The more you celebrate your life, the more is in your life to celebrate

Who is a bad friend?

Like a good friend don’t have any definition, bad ones misses it too.

A bad friend is someone who sucks your energy, encourage you for bad habits, uses you, and doesn’t value your presence, not even notice.

A bad friend, is always covered behind a mask of a good friend.

It’s very easy yet important to find out your bad friends, but first we should know what are the qualities of a bad friend.

What makes someone a bad friend?

A bad friend have all the qualities of a good friend, but opposite in nature.

Let’s see…

Don’t Care

A bad friend don’t care, about you or whatever you do.

They don’t even notice, whatever good or bad changes you bring to yourself.

They don’t care what you do, for yourself or for them, at maximum if they notice they’ll just compare it with others and criticize.

Try to change you

A bad friend never likes you, for what you are. They always think you are looking not good, or missing something.

They always try to change you, they will just say, It doesn’t suits you, it would be better if you do this or that!

They will say, they are changing you for better but in reality they are comparing you with others and changing you to someone who is more useful to them.

Demand, Support Never Give

Please, please, do me a favor. Aren’t you my friend?

-Okay, why not? We are friends…

A WEEK LATER

– Hello, how are you brother?

Fine, fine!

-Please do me a favor… (stopped in between)

What for?

-That’s what I was telling, you stopped me!

Ok, ok go on.

-I was thinking if you can help me with… Blah… Blah……, please help me!

Sure, I would have. But I don’t have time.

-Aren’t you my friend?

Yes I’m, but I can’t.

-Please, it Will only take 20 minutes.

-I said, I’m busy.

…….

-Hello?

-Hello?

Call ended!

Isn’t this familiar?

Let me guess, It is.

That’s what a toxic friend does. They always seek support, never give it to you when needed.

Have someone in mind? Don’t worry we will identify it later whether he is good one or toxic one.

Doesn’t value your presence

A toxic friend will not even notice you, whether you are there or not.

No matter whatever you do, to change yourself or for them, they won’t notice your efforts, praising is far under the ground.

A toxic friend can shout on you, in front of anyone. They don’t care about your feelings whether you are hurt or not. Even if they get to know that you are hurt, they will never apologize.

Always Themselves

A toxic friend will always talk of themselves, or the talks which includes them.

Whenever they will be in conversation with you, they will always focus on their problems, they will give you a chance (how are you?) but literally they will snap it away!

If you try to talk about yourself, they will either do the byes or will listen with least or zero concentration, like you will be are you listening?

Spreads the NEWS!

A toxic friend, can never be loyal.

you can’t trust, whatever you do. It’ll be in your deep heart, and you will ask him again and again don’t tell anyone!

I think here, we are in fault, why tell secrets to someone whom we ourselves can’t even trust.

If you trust, and your friend brakes your trust than we will see what can we do in the later sections.

If you regret, why you told that secret to someone, than it means you don’t completely trust him or her.

Don’t believe in You

A bad friend will never believe in you.

No matter whatever you do to convince them, they won’t.

Let’s suppose, you watched discovery Channel, and discovered something very interesting. When you share it with them, they will be like – Let’s google it!

Whatever you tell them, they will be like Nah, I don’t think that’s so, etc.

Demotivates you

A toxic friend will always try to demotivate you.

Whatever you are doing, they tell you all the possible reasons why you should NOT do this.

Not a single reason, they will give you why you should do this.

They will take you to a point, where you can’t think clearly and Will follow them blindly.

Compare you with others

A toxic friend will always compare you with others.

No matter whatever you do, they will be like X person did it like that, that was so cool, etc.

They will always try to put you down by either comparing or pointing out faults in whatever you do.

Makes you feel nervous

Reactions of a toxic friend are unpredictable.

They are very short tempered, and will shout on you for small things and than will be normal next moment.

This will make you uncomfortable with them and feel nervous.

You will not like to spend time with them.

Jealous of your success

They will pretend that they are happy for you, but inside they will be competing with you.

A toxic friend is always jealous of your achievements and will try to point out faults in that also.

No matter how much they try to take it, but it is written on their faces, I mean literally you will know it if you observe them.

Gives you back handed compliments

A toxic friend will always gives you back handed compliments.

These are those type of compliments in which they will be criticizing you in form of compliments.

For example:

  • You did better than I expected.
  • You are looking better than everyday does.
  • You are looking fantastic, but can look better.
  • You dressed beautifully and it suits you, but what can anyone do of your face.

Exclude you from plans

A bad friend will generally exclude you from their plans, and will say Oh sorry I forgot.

Or simply they will make you feel guilty by saying things like: I thought you Will be busy or You don’t like these kind of parties etc.

What are the difference between good friend and bad friend?

We’ll now compare and differentiate between good friend and toxic ones, so that you could have a clear idea of both of them.

How to identify a bad friend?

How to know if your friendship is gone toxic?

These are some indications which are due to a toxic friend or a toxic friendship:

Unpredictable

As we discussed above a toxic friend is always unpredictable, you will find it difficult to be comfortable with them.

Open your mind and try to figure out whether your friend also over react on small things or not?

If they do, then it’s not good for you.

Short tempered

A toxic friend is short tempered as he doesn’t care about your feelings.

Check out whether your friend is loosing his temper on very small things and can shout on you in front of anyone than it’s a indication of toxic friendship.

Compete with your achievements

If you find that your friend is competing with your achievements, instead of celebrating your achievements then it’s not cool at all.

Competition between friends is good, but competition over achievements is not good.

Only themselves

A good friendship, is that in which both speak fifty fifty.

But, in a toxic friendship this is not what happens, in this a single person speaks and another listens.

I don’t think that’s good.

If you think this is in your friendship, then be alert.

Cririticize

A toxic friend is always criticizing no matter what you do.

If you do something for them than they compare and criticize. If that’s the case than you have to think for your friendship.

Generally, they will say I just want to help you out and criticize.

Moreover they don’t accept any criticizm even if it’s true.

Blames you

If your friend blames you for everything which happen in your friendship or his life than it’s not cool.

A good friend never blames.

Only a toxic friend plays blame game, if any of your friends does more than often, then keep an eye on your friendship.

And if any other characteristics mention in previous section matches to your friends, then it’s a matter of concern

No need to worry, first we’ll see what a toxic friend does and how it affects you and then we will see what you need to do.

What a toxic friend does and how it affects you?

Now we’ll discuss what a toxic friend does and how it affects you.

What a toxic friend does?

There is a very thin line between the doings of a good friend and a toxic friend, let’s magnify it.

Makes fun of you

Its good until you are laughing at it, because it is common in friends.

But, a toxic friend forgets it’s limits and it becomes his/her regular habit.

Whenever you are with that person it’s definite that he will make fun of you and puts you down.

Moreover, with time they do it on anything literally anything like whatever you say, you dress etc.

Turn secret into breaking NEWS

We have already discussed this point.

A toxic friend doesn’t care about your feelings.

If by mistake you shared a secret of yours, than it will be trending in your social circle.

Apologize

First of all a toxic friend doesn’t care about your feelings.

but anyhow if they get to know that you are hurt, one case would be they won’t apologize.

But somehow if they did manage to apologize, their apologies would be like:

I’m sorry for that but I thought that would be good for you!

Their sorry is always followed by but, making you feel guilty.

Leave you unsettled

A good friend is a stress reliever, but a toxic friend will instead add to it.

Whenever you meet a toxic friend after your meeting, they will leave you unsettled and under more stress.

You will not be wishing to meet them again.

Compare

We have already discussed this point.

A good friend never compares you with anyone.

But a toxic friend will.

They will make you feel guilty by comparing you with others and showing how bad you did something comparatively.

Try to change you

A good friend accept you as you are whereas a toxic friend will try to change you.

Rest all things which a toxic friend does are discussed above.

How a toxic friend affects you?

There are many negative impacts of having a toxic friend, such as:

Feel lonely and Isolated

You will feel lonely and isolated when you will not be with them.

It simply means that they will make you feel dependent on them for being happy.

Increased Stress level

Friends are stress relievers but toxic friends aren’t.

After you have met a toxic friend, you will feel exhausted as they suck all your energy and feel more stress.

and increased stress level can lead to several health issues.

Self confidence and self esteem takes sand bath

Yup, it’s what happens.

With increased stress level and so much of self doubt, there will be a time you yourself will start believing that you are wrong.

You won’t be able to see your capabilities and hence your self esteem and confidence will take a hit.

Blaming Yourself

When your self esteem and confidence will be lost, what will happen?

You will start blaming yourself.

For whatever wrong happens you will blame yourself.

Other relationships Suffer

It’s pretty simple that if one tyre of a vehicle gets off balance than whole vehicle will.

That means, your other relationships will suffer due to this.

And that’s not good at all.

What you should do if you have a bad friend?

If you have a toxic friend, what can you do about that, let’s see…

Give them another chance

Maybe your friend isn’t a toxic one but simply does mistakes.

You can give him another chance, and wait for some time if something changes.

If it doesn’t and the friendship is not fruitful than it’s high time to end it.

Its Your time

Give yourself some time.

see how your life goes without that person in your life.

You can do whatever you like, work on your hobbies etc..

Build Boundaries

Yup build and tell that person that they don’t cross their limitations.

Just tell them you don’t like it when they does the specific things.

This step is only if you still wish to preserve your friendship.

Practice before Action

If you want to end your friendship than write down all things which you are going to say to that person.

Practice them before actually going to him.

Be direct

Be direct don’t talk here and there.

You don’t have to make him/her happy now, so don’t wobble around, just say what you came for

But be calm.

Don’t React

As you want to break the friendship but another person won’t.

So, they will try to brush off this topic or pretend to be angry, so don’t over react.

Just be calm, tell them why you want to end the friendship and leave.

Open up to others

There are many good friends around you, so just open up with others.

They will give you the support to overcome the pressure.

How to choose a good friend?

All the characteristics of a good friend are discussed above but there are three things upon which you have to focus.

Energy

All are made up of energies, so in my opinion this is the beat factor to think upon.

A toxic friend sucks all your energy while a true friend gives you energy to succeed.

Never choose a YES man

Most of the people like those people who always give them false praises.

Don’t go with them.

The past

Keep distance from those who try to drag you to the past.

For example: It was so cool when we were kids, or you were awesome back then, now you are changed etc.

How can you be a good friend?

You can be a good friend by bringing the characteristics of good friend in your life.

You can learn more in this article :

How can you be a good friend? (Link will be updated soon!)

Note: I haven’t discussed it here because the article would have gone infinite long.

After reading this post you would be able to find and stay with good friends and get rid of bad friends.
